Sorano Sovana Pitigliano

ETRUSCAN AND MEDIEVAL SOUTHERN TUSCANY

1st Itinerary ( Southern Tuscany – a tour of the Etruscan and medieval centres of the Maremman hills: Sorano-Sovana-Pitigliano; one day)

Morning

sorano.jpgSORANO: You can begin your tour, visiting Sorano, a lovely hill town perched on the top of a rock. A tour of Sorano is best begun at the Orsini Fortress, an impressive example of the 13th century military architecture which was enlarged during the rule of Niccolò Orsini IV in 1552. After visiting the Fortress (the guided tour takes 50′ minutes) we now suggest a stroll through the old town centre of  Sovana. After are visit to the city center we’ll visit the Ildebranda Tomb, the most important example of an Etruscan temple tomb in all Etruria.

Afternoon

After visiting the tiny, perfectly preserved medieval town of Sovana we’ll travel on a fascinating road cut deep in the rock before reaching Pitigliano. It is a wonderful old town, built on Etruscan foundations, full of hidden corners and timeless sights. It was the seat of the Orsini family. Here we can visit the archaeological Museum which is housed in the internal courtyard of the Orsini Palace and contains a large collection of Etruscan pieces which were discovered in the surroundings. Now we suggest that you walk through the old town centre where you can visit the Jewish Synagogue and the Jewish quarter, now no longer inhabited.
