Marta Capodimonte e Gradoli
1st Itinerary ( Marta, Capodimonte, Isola Bisentina, Gradoli, Grotte di Castro; one day)
Morning
You can start visiting Marta and Capodimonte two lovely fishing villages. From Capodimonte a small mahogany Ferry Boat will take you to the Bisentina Island. You can visit the island on a guided tour. The round trip takes about two hours which includes a twenty minutes swim.
Afternoon
We will continue our tour around the lake, visiting Gradoli, an agricultural centre in the midst of the Volsini hills, rising up on a plane of volcanic rocks. The town is seat of an imposing and well preserved Farnese palace.
In the late afternoon we will reach Grotte di Castro, characteristic for its Etruscan origin, we will have a walk through the medieval quarter and the Etruscan necropolis just outside the town.
Heading east, leaving the lake’s shores we will reach Civita di Bagnoregio, described as “The Dying Village”. It is a nearly deserted village which clings to the summit of a hill of tufa, gradually crumbling owing to atmospheric conditions. It can only be reached by foot over a narrow viaduct as wind and weather have eroded the road.
It is a fascinating place not to be missed!
