Bolsena Montefiascone Bagnoregio
Itinerary ( Bolsena, Montefiascone, Civita di Bagnoregio; one day)
Morning
The first stop of our tour will be Bolsena where we will visit the medieval quarter, the Collegiata di S. Cristina which in 1263 was home to the miracle of the Corpus Domini, an event of immense religious significance for Christians.
Then we will travel to Montefiascone where we can admire the beautiful Romanesque church of San Flaviano. In the centre of the town we will visit the cathedral of Santa Margherita where James Stuart, pretender to the English throne, was married in 1719 before going to live in Rome.
Then we will walk up to the Rocca Papale, the highest spot in the town, where there are wonderful views of the lake.
Afternoon
Heading east, leaving the lake’s shores we will reach Civita di Bagnoregio, described as “The Dying Village”. It is a nearly deserted village which clings to the summit of a hill of tufa, gradually crumbling owing to atmospheric conditions. It can only be reached by foot over a narrow viaduct as wind and weather have eroded the road.
It is a fascinating place not to be missed!
